Uygur Silk. When I was last in China (one of my very favorite places), I traveled to Xinjiang province, and to Urumqi (near the Gobi Desert). It is a wonderful and fascinating province. While exploring a bazaar in search of the hand-loomed ikat silks that are still used in traditional clothing, I discovered one woman selling meters of the silks (not the polyester lengths that are being produced more and more), and could not resist.
The silks are narrow, 20” (limited by the type and size of the loom), and $30.00 per yard, 1 yard minimum. No returns/refunds on cut fabric.

“Boy Banners” are displayed to celebrate Boy’s Day (Tango-no Sekku). In the past, there were separate holidays for girls and boys, but today they are all honored on Children’s Day (May 5). The boy banners are created for the family, and include the family crest and images of strength. The banners are often handed down from generation to generation, although each banner is usually flown only once in honor of the birth of that particular child.
